I was coming down HWY 93 once from Salmon ID to Arco ID, long straight stretches of highway, no one about. Doing about 90 mph. There was a cummings doing rural mail delivery in front of me. We were about 1/2 mile behind the truck. I was not catching up with the truck at that speed. He must of have been doing 110-120 between mail boxes.

The class structure for that event is pretty strange with it starting at a 95mph top speed going up to unlimited. It would suck being in the 95mph class since that would just be a normal day of driving on a road like that out in the desert. I mean going 80-85 is likely just the normal flow of traffic there, with plenty going 100+. That would certainly be the most boring race lol. The unlimited class (I assume this video is part of) seems kind of fun though just in terms of uniqueness. While there arent many turns, just going those kind of speeds for that long is kind of cool.

Also, did they go to this event on roadkill? I seem to recall a speed limited event like this where they got kicked out for going too fast lol.

The idea is that the safety requirements go up as the speeds do. The 95MPH class is one pretty much any factory car can do so the entry to competing is minimal. As you go up, more safety gear is required. And they require a certain number of years experience before jumping up in the higher classes so people understand what they’re getting into rather than “I got money!” going out and creaming themselves in a Lambo they rented for the event. Most classes are about precision. The goal is to hit that time, and usually the winning time is no more than a few seconds off.

He’s turning his head towards the co driver quite a bit, that is my only criticism. I think if I was doing 140 I’d be 100% focused but I’ve never gone that fast or had a car that could go that fast.

Given how straight the road is, and that you are kind of just cruising at that point, I cant imagine it really demands 100% focus. Even if it werent a closed course, you could probably get by safely doing 140 until you come across a truck doing 50 lol. But yeah I did find it unnerving to watch.

I think they are both in the “unlimited” class where you can go as fast as your vehicle can go. Meaning they both would have to have the maximum required safety equipment. Or he is breaking the rules lol.

If it helps, he’s literally cruising. This is the Silver State Classic. He’s not trying to go flat out, he needs to try to maintain a consistent speed over the length of the course (by the sounds of it he’s in the 140 mph class). So he’s probably barely on the throttle, just trying to keep the steady speed.
